Blogger Kristina Chew on Today Show
9 Comments Published by Autism Library October 31st, 2008 in autism, other blogs, press reports, vaccinesThe Today show did a segment this week on vaccines and autism. Along with Dr. Paul Offit, Kristina Chew (AutismVox) was interviewed.
As an aside from the vaccine debate, I think we all need to say, “Go Charlie!!!”. I’ve read about Charlie (and dad) and the bike rides, now I’ve seen it. Good job, master Chew!
Here’s the Today Show segment:
The part with Kristina shows up about Minute 4 of the video. Kristina discusses bike-riding Charlie on the Today show on her blog.
The first part, as you can imagine, is about Dr. Offit and the vaccine/autism question. This story starts by focusing on the controversy–centering on the anger that has been focused on Dr. Offit.
The middle section (again, about minute 4) has Kristina Chew and family.
There is a very interesting exchange at the end between Dr. Nancy Snyderman (who ran the piece) and Matt Lauer of the Today Show. Dr. Snyderman does a good job of keeping Matt Lauer from pushing promoting the idea that the question is “controversial”. Matt Lauer pushes the idea that it is controversial amongst parents, while Dr. Snyderman keeps to the theme that this topic is far from controversial in any real debate.
Kristina notes on her blog:
The vaccine-autism issue aggravates because it diverts attention from autistic children, from autistic individuals, and fixates on what (despite more and more evidence to the contrary) some believe is a cause of autism.
But, we play the hand we are dealt. Unfortunately, that hand right now contains the vaccine-debate. I, for one, am glad to see Kristina taking on the question in the public eye.
But, in the end, the important stuff–Go Charlie!
I wonder if Charlie thinks time spent on vaccine arguments is beneficial?
VACCINES CAUSE AUTISM .
KRISTINA CHEW IS A PHD IN ENGILSH HER SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE IS ZERO DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING SHE SAYS
There are no randomized double blind studies for any vaccines. Not even one zippo. The government has spent over 1 billion dollars on vaccine related deaths and neurological injuries not counting Anna Pohling that was settled this year without even a court fight.
VACCINES CAUSE AUTISM AND AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS NOT JUST IN HUMANS BUT ANIMALS TOO. vETINARIANS ARE NOW RECOMENDING LESS VACCINES FOR ANIMALS GOOGLE IT FOR YOURSELF
CS: This isn’t the place to find the answer to that question.
To answer a different question: I think that time spent on the vaccine issue is beneficial. Unchecked, a large fraction of research funding might be going towards that end. I’d like to see some directed towards some other topics–like services and supports for adults. Those are not as easy to “sell” as research on therapies for small children, and might be first to go should vaccine research take some resources.
Mr. Payne,
thank you for your viewpoint. I will point out that asking people to not listen to Prof. Chew (because she isn’t trained in this field) while also telling people to look to Google for advice is somewhat inconsistent from where this reader sits.
A PhD. in English does not mean the woman is ignorant of science. It is relevant, though, in illustrating that she is an intelligent and educated woman, probably well versed in rationality. This would imply that she is capable of reading scientific reports with a modicum of comprehension and is also capable of scrutinizing and evaluating the information in such reports.
It’s not controversial? Yes, Nancy, it is. There is a tremendous amount of discussion and disagreement about what causes autism. That’s controversy.
Hello,
My name is Reena Soni and I am a third year BSC Psychology student at the University of East London. I am looking for people who have children with autism to complete an online questionnaire for my final year project (the link is below).
If you know anyone, could you please take a moment to forward this link to your friends and family I would be really grateful if you would consider taking part in my study.
This study aims to investigate the perception of parents of children with autism using applied behaviour analysis (ABA) compared to parents not using applied behaviour analysis.
If you would like to take part please either copy and paste on the link below into your browser or click on it.
